An optometrist has completed pre-professional undergraduate education in a college or university and four years of professional education at a college of optometry, leading to the doctor of optometry (O.D.) degree. • Orthoptist (CA) - Orthopists are eye care specialists who work with ophthalmologists to evaluate and treat eye movement and alignment disorders. Orthopists help patients manage or cure ocular conditions such as crossed eyes, double vision and lazy eye (amblyopia). Orthopists may also assist ophthalmologists create treatment plans including eye exercises, eye patches, eye drops or special glasses.
