Ophthalmic Assistant - Ophthalmic assistants help ophthalmologists care for patients by taking histories, performing various procedures and tests, and preparing patients to see the doctor. Their work provides the ophthalmologist with important information to help diagnose and treat patients.
Ophthalmology - An ophthalmologist is a specialist in medical and surgical eye problems. Since ophthalmologists perform operations on eyes, they are both surgical and medical (M.D.) specialists. Trained as doctors, Ophthalmologists must have completed a college degree, medical shool, as well as residency in ophtalmology.
Optometric Assistant - A trained Optometric Assistant is a key member of the eye care team and helps to provide vision care to patients in eye care facilities. Optometric Assistants will assist with vision measurements for glasses, administering eye exercise, taking medical histories from patients, conducting diagnostic tests and providing contact-lens instruction.
Optometric Technician - Optometric technicians assist optometrists in performing a variety of tasks such as recording patient medical histories and helping prepare patients for the vision examinations. They also assist with tests that include patient pre-testing for visual acuity, color vision, depth perception, pupil reflexes, visual field testing, pressure inside the eye, and blood pressure. Optometric technicians may also be asked to assist with eye exercises and vision therapy. Optometric technicians are usually supervised by an optometrist to ensure patient health and well being.
